96 R heating issues

Post by Clemens »

Good morning!

On my 96R there seems to be a problem with the Climate/heating control. The driver side vents seem to be stuck in the heating position. It hd the ECC unit. It doesn't blink any lights after startup so I guess the ECC doesn't have any codes stored.

I guess there must be a door stuck somewhere down the dash. Is there a way to get it unstuck or cycle the doors "manually"?

Deep in these for are the wiring diagrams , you could use a 9 v battery to step the motor back and forth. Does anyone have a spare harness piece to connector that for Clemens?

I would also add that if you have a code reader, it would be worth while reading the codes, resetting them, and then checking again after a while to see which codes come back. That will help narrow down the likely suspects such as which damper motor is not responding.

There’s a blend door on each side so if it’s stuck on heat, that means driver side blend door faulty, pretty definitive.

Maybe 42 in this diagram from online Volvo parts store?

Could just be age-related door stickiness. Have that motor off and move the flapper full range. That would let you check for the dreaded broken plastic drive collar too.

Sorry for replying to your helpful answers 5 weeks later. I ran into so many other timeconsuming, non Volvo related issues in the last couple of weeks that I am back at this only today.

On the same day this problem occured, I first couldn't get the R to start because of an empty battery, but after jumpstarting it, it ran fine and the heater seemed to work well again.
I wonder if that stuck vent door could have drained the battery with the ignition off - but I doubt it.

Seems that the battery is dead, which then makes me wonder if the stuck door was related to running on low voltage.
I'll get a new battery these days and continue to check if the door still gets stuck occasionally.
I'll have to pull the dash for the AC overhaul anyway, so I'll try to clean the vent doors properly.

Again, thank you for the fast and helpful replies
