Buying a used Polestar 2 - Should I be worried?

Post by MaryannWilliams »

Hey all! I’ve been very strongly considering a used Polestar 2 as my next car. I’ve been trying to track one down for a little while, and I’ve found what seems to be a great deal — an MY22 LRDM with the plus pack and pretty low miles, for a low enough price that it would qualify for the 25K used EV tax credit.

I love the car and I’m almost about to pull the trigger on it, but I’m a little worried by a lot of the news I’ve seen about the brand as a whole — especially with the new tariffs and restrictions on China-made vehicles being implemented. I know it won’t affect the car itself in the short term, but if Polestar does end up going underwater, is service something I should be concerned about? Would Volvo dealerships continue servicing the car/would parts continue being available? I’d really like to avoid ending up in the same boat that old Saab owners did. Would it be better to wait a few months to see how things end up faring with the P3 and P4?

I know this forum might be a little biased in terms of answers, but I’d appreciate any advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation. Thanks for the help!

Polestar 2 is different from the Volvo P2 platform that was used for the S80, V70, XC70, S60, and XC90 vehicles. The P2 platform was developed right before Ford purchased Volvo in the late 1990s. Ford sold Volvo to Geely in China during 2009. Polestar is a Geely subsidiary along with Volvo. I can't offer much info for recent Geely, Volvo, or Polestar vehicles.

I don’t know what a LRDM is.
Matt has some recent knowledge of the electric offerings.

The Polestar LR DM is an interesting car. (LR = Long Range, DM + Dual Motor).

These reviewers really enjoyed driving the car in all aspects.

The rumblings of Polestar demise is concerning. However, with the rise in more Volvo electric vehicles and Geely having more electric offerings we don't see, I could see that there is perhaps some questions of why do you still need Polestar?

Personally, if I could afford an electric vehicle, I would like one of these, but they are out of reach for me.

Unfortunately with the tariffs and the US being a large market it could well go the way of the Fiskar and other smaller brands. The only difference may be that as the parent company is still around they may continue to support the vehicle for a a while longer. The main danger may not be getting parts but if they stop the brand, where is the support going to come from, Volvo dealers? The other thing is unless you can keep the car for a long time, you may end up with a car you can't sell.

If you go for it, I wish you well and would love to hear your experience. I love the look of the car.

Good Luck whichever way you go.

Neil.

I wouldn't just call it different, P2 is ancient, old, it's a 20-30 year old platform.

Model T Ford is ancient. The P2 Volvos are old by modern standards but they aren't rusting from mid-west winters like almost all other cars with 200,000+ miles. I just have to do a lot more maintenance and repairs compared to a Lexus or Toyota owner. I miss doing car work in a road-salt-free location!

I would not buy electric polestar. The only positives in it-design of interior and exterior. Software and electric drive components are inferior to Tesla. So rather buy used Tesla S (will be way better quality in comparison to 3 or Y). In terms of Mach-e, i am not a big fan of interior, but cant say much bad about the car. My neighbors have it for 2 years and I haven't heard about any problems or disappointments(probably 35k miles at this point). Look into leases for new EV models. Maybe it is more cost beneficial solution for you. Used EV- i would probably only look at Tesla.

That is exactly what I was conveying with those words. I personally am at my limits(a money pit). Doing repair work every 100 miles means never trusting the car to get you from A to B.
