2005 XC70 Losing guages and turbo

Post by Amy608 »

ImageI've had this car as a daily driver for a while with no issues. But in the last couples weeks I've had several instances where after I've been driving for a while, like running errands, I'll go to start it and I will have no dash guages or turbo. Car runs fine other than that. If I unhook the battery, reset it, back to normal. I haven't figured out why it's happening either. Like, every time it rains or if I run the ac, there's no thing I can pinpoint.

It happened the other day while I was driving, which has never happened before. It's always after it's been turned off and I go to restart again. But anyways, I keep driving, no big deal. All of a sudden it kicked, almost like I hit something, and everything turned back on.

My usual mechanic is having an existential crisis because his wife threw him out (he totally deserved it). So any thoughts would be appreciated.

Getting to know your mechanic that well must be expensive. This forum and VIDA/DICE have saved me many thousands and kept me out of the dealer for everything other than software updates, alignments, and recalls.

How do you know you lost the turbo?

I had a problem with 2004 XC70 gauges and finally found a bad solder joint on a transistor. Until I re-flowed the solder in that transistor, I would have intermittent function of the display panel and gauges. No function in cold and then they would start working when it was warm.

I haven't owned a vehicle with less than 200k miles in years. And I have 3 driving teenagers currently. Me and my mechanic are besties.

I can feel the turbo not being there. I'm used to driving a big truck so if I hop on the highway in the volvo, I'm doing 90 2 seconds later because I'm used to having to really get on it. When it did the thing the other day, I had my 16 year old with me so I was using it as a learning experience on how you don't need guages, you just need to listen to and know your car. We were out in the country, so I come to a stop sign and said listen to her. I took off and floored it, pedal to the floor, and it took me forever to get up to 60. Once she gets up to speed, she's fine. But to get there, you can feel her struggling. If it was just me, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. But my 16 year old wants this car vs the suv I was going to give him.

Idk??? The first time it did it, my mechanic met me and did the battery thing, so that's what I've been doing. I didn't even think to have them run codes when I was at autozone last week getting ac stuffs. I feel like if I make them go outside in this heat I'm going to have to take them cookies so I don't feel bad.

Another option for the instrument panel if you aren't into taking electronics apart and soldering is to use a rework facility. The Volvos don't like swapping out the instrument panel from another car because the mileage is stored in the CEM and the IP. When the two modules don't match for mileage the higher number is selected.

The turbo control valve is a wear item and a good candidate for malfunctioning turbo but it is an expensive part and the car will diagnose problems with this part - just need a good scan tool.
