Are control arms interchangeable between a p2 v70 and xc70?

Post by JadwinBrown »

As the subject says im curious if the front control arms are interchangeable between an xc70 and v70. I own a 2002 v70 and the whole front end is due for a rebuild. Brand new control arms seem too expensive when I could just replace the bushings themselves for a third of the cost. My only dilemma is I would like to go pick up another set to do the refresh on as I will be replacing multiple components at once and it would be nice to just have another set to drop in when I get to it. Used control arms at my local pick and pull are 25 a piece but they only ever have xc70s. Despite them looking the same, FCP and IPDs fitment guides state that they dont work but I dont understand why. Im hoping someone here could help shed some light on whether they do or dont and why.

I believe the arms are not interchangeable since the ride hights is different between xc70 and v70. However the bushings are likely the same(thats why they fail so often on xc70). If you have good equipment to replace bushings(press, adaptors, ...) and time, it should not be expensive at all. But if able to afford set of lemferders from fcp, I would rather do that

Maybe you can find an S60 at the junkyard? Those are for more plentiful than V70 cars.

2001-2007 S60 uses same control arms as an 02 V70.

According to the listing on FCPEuro website, XC70 front control arms only fit XC70 01-07 and no other models.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... it#fitment

However, looking at a Volvo dealer website, they list them as the same?

Hmmm...

V70 arms are alum, XC are steel, even the balljoints are different.

I’ve had 150k life on my P2 v70 front end, I’m not sure keeping a set around makes sense. Are your roads really bad where you drive?

I’ll pull part numbers to end the debate in the question.

Jonesg, please check your facts. Maybe such was true on P1, but P2 v70xc and xc70 are aluminum

Just fitted a set of Lemforder's to an 02 XC70. Those that came off were aluminum and those that went on were also.

jonesg is correct with the rear control arms, they are steel. I need to get on protecting all that stuff in the rear as the salt up here is destroying our son's car at the rear on all the suspension stuff. The crappy expensive Munro 4C rear shocks look like the tin moths have been heavily snacking on them. They are OE replacements and are about 10 years or less old with under 50k miles on them and they look like junk.

I wouldnt scrimp on control arms - any money you save on the arms will possibly cost you on tire wear. If you are comfortable replacing the bushings of course that will work great, otherwise I would get OEM - they should last 100k mi anyway...
