Front end clunking noise at low speeds,2002 XC70 Cross Count

Post by mitchellbd »

My 2002 Cross Country has 50,000 miles and for about the last 10,000 miles I have been getting a rattleing in the front end. It seems to be coming from the right side when I am driving, but sounds like the driver side when I am the passenger.
I have replaced the tie rods, both sides and also the left and right ends. This did not help, in fact the noise seemed to increase slightly.
Has anyone had a like problem that might help me pin-point the noise.

Did you replace the sway bar links?
This is the most common part that fails.
If so, look at your strut mounts, if/when they crack, same noises will occur.
If you look at the top of the struts you can actually see the cracked mount

I had someone sway the car side to side using the roof rack while I felt the sway bar links. The lower joint on the passenger side was very sloppy and the driver side link had some play also. I also checked the rear links. These look new and feel tight.
Thanks you might have solved my problem.

Passenger side goes first, more potholes there.
That's not the way to do it, you get the wheel off the ground and use a pry bar on the link end. If they rock back and forth, even a little bit, they're bad

I, too, have this problem on my '01 S60. It's very frustrating, and I guess I'll have to start replacing parts until it's fixed.

Worn out sway bar links and/or cracked strut mounts are the most common front end knocks and clunks

Yes, As I mentioned in the other thread, I had the dealer replace the bushing and the link ends. IIRC the bushings on the '93 are replaceable, but that later years they made a change that required the replacement of the sway bar if the bushings went bad. Apparently they are moulded right onto the SW.
