Alternator compability

Post by 5rivers »

Hello everyone!

I managed to remove the alternator from my V70 T5 1998 Volvo and it is in dire shape - the brushes are just about done for and they are uneven to boot making a deeper cut into the center rod (I know there is a specific name for this, but it escapes me at the moment!).
This alternator is a Volvo 9162683 model and my question is about the alternator out of my parts car - a '98 V70 base, M56. Are these two alternators interchangeable? The one out the base V70 is rebuilt alternator that has a REMY label on it with a 14981 number. When I look this up, a starter comes up! There is a definite difference in the two alternators - the Remy rebuilt one has the B+ post and the small copper slip for the wire in opposite positions than the Volvo alternator. The Remy rebuilt alternator also has a different style regulator - almost oval plastic cover in the middle with the following numbers:
VRB200H
J556257
RECITAR USA
and only has one copper prong from the inside to the regulator; whereas the Volvo alternator has 2 copper prongs and the distinguishing grayish plastic cover labelled as 1197311520.
Both V70's are FWD, but the V70 with the Volvo alternator is a turbo with a 2.3L engine, while the V70 with the M56 transmission is the base model with a 2.4L engine.
I will try to load pictures.
I suspect these are not interchangeable, but thought I would ask the forum for a definitive response!
Appreciate your help on this!

They should both work being 98 cars. They should both have the 100A Bosch/Volvo alternators. There is a chance a base car might have some weird 80A version that I have not heard of. Unlikely. That does not mean an rebuilt unit might be different. The only issue is if one is a cross-over and is running a 120A one from a later car. You should be able to tell as they run in opposite directions on a -98 and 99-.

Pictures will help for sure.

They just need a b+ post with a 13 mm hex nut and a slip electrical connection for the blue exciter wire and they will work

-1998 one style

1999- different.

The Volvo alternator/regulator has much more wear than the rebuilt unit.
