1997 850 Slow strating problem-Fuel pump?

Post by toontown »

My daughters car has a problem on the first start in the morning. It will take about double the crank time to start and leaves a fuel smell? After running for a few minutes you can shut it off and it will start up normally. It has 250K on it. I took it to Volvo so I can get her back on the road for school. The Volvo dealership is saying fuel pump ($600). Does this seem right?
Any advice woudl be appreciated.

I always hate to disagree with a dealership that has actually seen the car but it is not normal for a bad fuel pump to behave in that manner you describe. Normally when a fuel pump goes bad the car will not start at all.

I think that they meant to say the fuel check valve is bad. That is more consistent with the symptoms you describe. Unfortunately the check valve is built into the fuel pump assembly.

I have heard that you can simply add a check valve to the fuel line but I don't know where to get one. I think JRL has a source - hopefully he will jump in.
