1990 240DL Wagon gas consumption has doubled

The gas mileage has doubled on my 1990 240DL wagon after replacing my complete exhaust system. I cleaned the O2 sensor with a approved O2 sensor cleaner. The O2 sensor had been replaced last year. My check engine light is also on. I am unable to read or clear the codes .

When i push the diagnostic button down i do not get any blinking pattern / codes and i have in the past. I also cannot clear the cdes at all the led stays lit no matter what i do with the diagnostic button and or jumper placement.
