I'm not sure if this will be the answer to your problem but in the long ago days fuel systems were vented to the outside. When the new closed vent systems arrived we had a similar problem with some Vauxhall (GM) cars.
We found that a vacuum was being created in the tank which slowed down fuel delivery. Loosen the cap and the vacuum was released and the cars would run normally.
On further examination we found that the closed vent system had a blockage.
Next time it happens loosen your cap, retighten it and see if it made a difference.
Bill.

Work was good - retirement is better.

The fuel pumps were a problem on these cars, check this, it's from a Tech Net Note supplied by Volvo. Probably needs a new pump unit.

It may be the beginning signs of the lastest recall, regarding the fuel pressure sensor that I replaced. My Thread was: OBD11 code P0192. The combination of a vacuum created in the closed fuel system, and an insensitive fuel pressure sensor, could cause the pressure to drop below injector minimum requirement. No gas no go! A fuel filter change wouldn't hurt. Most likely you have a turbo, so check if this recall is on the turbo models as well.
