Hi,
I just got my ATF-3309 and was going to change my atf. The old smelled a little burned and was brown. Should I drain and fill or flush? The previous owner never changed the atf before. I have heard conflicting things about doing a complete flush...something to do with too many detergents in an already worn tranny. Any assistace would be greatly appreciated.

At your miles and since you're not saying black and severely burnt smell, I would do a complete flush.

Thanks MIJ. The 3/4" tube was not snug so I had to use some teflon plumbers tape. I still had a little leakage, but manageable. Also, on my '02, there was a plastic/poly shield underneath that needed to be removed to access the drain plug.
I do have a question about checking the level of the fluid. When the dipstick is referring to cold, is that when the engine is running but just started? Is hot after it has been driven? I seemed to have added too much and after driving it, the fluid level was very high...well above the hot reading. Then I syphoned out about 1/2 quart and let it sit overnight. I checked the cold reading the next morning with the engine running (after just starting it) and it read the bottom line of the cold line. A minute later it was one tick higher. So I guess the question after all this rambling is...how do you check the level of the atf? My owners manual says nothing.
Thanks

I sent you an email...a response to the same questions here.
Always check when hot and after driven 20 minutes or more (with the car running). I know this is hard as everything is hot and the dip stick is hard to reach. Go through the gears with foot on brake for 5~10 seconds each. The cold setting just isn't very accurate as you've found.

Hopefully with burnt fluid your tranny isn't ruined but as MIJ said, you need a FULL flush and have the dealer upgrade any software (then prey)!
Always check tranny fluid hot, idling, (after at least 1/2 hour of running). Forget the cold mark, that is just a quick check to see if you have any fluid in there and not accurate and that too would be running just after starting

Sorry about the double posting...email and here. I wasn't sure which would be the fastest means and I was afraid to be driving around with too much or too little ATF and ruin my tranny. Thanks for the sppedy response on both!
