2000 volvo S40 Misfires

Post by [email protected] »

have a 200 volvo s40. It has always been maintained very well all the time. Synthetic oil mobil one and premium gas with fuel cleaner techron at least every 3000 miles. It started stalling on me a few weeks ago. The check engine light came on and the dynamic stability traction control light came on. My mechanic hooked it up to his computer it showed multiple misfires. The coils was not making a good circuit do to the volvo springs those were replaced she heated up and the light came on again. It showed running on two cylinders coil circuit failure and misfires. The coils were replaced and springs. I drove it home after she got warm same problem running on two cylinder's firing and my mechanic replaced the plugs all platinum and now only 10 minutes after driving she started with the check engine light and rough idling. Where as before it took her 50 minutes of driving 60 mph to heat up to act up with the error on the computer coil circuit failure. Please any advice aside from taking it too volvo which I may do at great cost towing from my mechanic service station down the block to the volvo dealer in huntington town is 30 miles any help or advice would be appreciated? My mechanic is a great guy and never ripped me off he is trouble shooting it but, any help please post? The car has 80,000 miles on it.

Please help someone,
Richard Walston

I'm having the same exact issue. Since it triggers transmission codes also, my mechanic is insisting that the transmission is the culprit. I'm not so sure.

If I read your original.post right, the coil and spark plugs have been replaced. What about the ignition leads from the coil packs to cyl 1& 2?

CHECK COMPRESSION

Not screaming, just putting emphasis.

You can spend $$$ chasing the wrong thing, an engine needs these things to work:

1- Timing
2- Compression
3- Spark
4- Fuel

Since only 2 cylinders are misfiring, then its dafe to assume that timing is OK. Tell your indy mechanic to check for Compression, then have him confirm that the coils are actually firing, then have him test the fuel pressure and that the injectors are actually working.

From the sound of your problem you *may have a bad head gasket*. Don't tell your indy mechanic that I said that, else then he should pay me for doing his work.

If he replaces any other parts, tell him that its on his dime if that does not fix the problem.

BTW: we like codes, so post them here so we can better help you.
