91 940 turbo wgn gear shifter problem

PArked car in driveway, shut it off. Started it up later in PARK, gear shifter loosely "floated" between gears and won't "catch", always in neutral. putt on emergency brake and removed plastic coverings to expose the gear shifter. Found a broken thin piece of black plastic floating on side of gear shifter. Shifter will move from Park when top button pushed down on shifter, but engine doesn't correspond, remains running in neutral. HELP!

found this loose on side of shift lever base, there is another clip that broke off of this piece and is still attached. where do I find another and what do the clips attach to?

Yes, that worked.

It looks like part #25 on the attached. This is part of the shift lock mechanism. Part #26 is the manual release.

The note says up to year '91 for the part number.

The second attachment shows how it all fastens together.

Thanks for the help! Of course you can't buy just the piece that I need to replace, they only sell that piece within a package of several pieces! $200 for a piece of plastic! Thanks again.

Glad to help but all manufacturers are the same - you need to buy too much to get what you need.

Have you tried http://www.erievovo.com/. I have no personal experience as I live across the pond, but others have found them helpful. Apparently a telephone call is better than an email.

How hard to replace entire gear shifter? Have found some in junkyards for $50. Looks like 4 bolts

That is about it if you are talking about the complete assembly, lever, selector gate etc.

One point - the lever was changed in 1993 so it will not fit into your car.
