Unessecary Roughness

Post by adollarwodbnice »

I still haven't really figured out why this car is so rough when it idles nd when it's in reverse. The second you put it in drive it just shakes really bad it's loud uncomfortable and weird. But the second you give it some gas it's perfect with no problems. However when you are in reverse the car shakes really bad and acts like it's going to stall. What can I do to try and fix any of this??

Also a random question to go with this so I don't need to open another thread up. I still can't figure out where i'm supposed to put this seafoam stuff for the intake; can someone show me a picture of where the vacuum line is or something?

Rough idle is likely a dirty or faulty air mass meter (AMM or MAF are common abbreviations). Do a search and you'll find a way to clean it.

You could also have a vacuum leak. Check your hoses.

First of all, what year and model is your car.

Do you have a check engine light on or any codes?

I checked the codes maybe 3 weeks ago fixed some of the issues then reset the ones that would reset. I'll check again but the car has always run like this I just have been driving the car more often and it's starting to worry me. I had a compression test done and was told everything was fine would that show if there's a leak in a hose? the year is a 93 and it's an 850 GLT.

No check engine light and i'll check the codes again when I have time but last time I checked them they were all fine.

A compression test will not show a hose leak, it only shows if there internal block/head damage that allows combustion gases out.

My '93 850 had similar idling problems as yours. There weren't any codes, but what helped eliminate the idling/shaking problem was replacing the throttle position sensor (TPS). You might want to try cleaning yours first before replacing it as well as checking if the wiring connection is secure and clean by unplugging and plugging it a few times.

If you do a search at Volvospeed.com, you can find a seafoam discussion thread there that has pictures of the vacuum tree which is located underneath the plastic throttle cover. I think you might able to find pictures of the vacuum tree on this site also.

Previous owner had them replaced with newer ones along with some other parts such as the ABS sensors (although I had 2 codes for the back left and right) and a rebuilt trans. He gave me the receipts for everything and claimed he was trying to get the car running good as new again. I ran into the guy I bought it from yesterday and talked to him about the car and he told me he took it to his mechanic months before he decided to sell it. They said the upper motor mount was worn badly and would help with the vibration but he said it never really changed much so I never thought to look at them.

Tomorrow is my day off so i'm gonna tool some more with the car. I have a nice little paper with a checklist of things to do/look over. :D
Hopefully checking out the throttle body and possibly cleaning it will help with my problem since i'm not trying to spend anymore money than I already have in the last month >_<

BTW Thanks for the spelling lesson because it's so helpful towards the problems i'm having with my car.
