Hello, I have a 1981 Volvo 240 DL that will start, but immediatly stalls as soon as the ignition goes from "start" to "On" position. I replaced the fuel pump relay because I was not getting power to the ignition coil, distributor, or fuel pumps (all on that relay according to Haynes Manual) when the key is in the "on" position. The new relay did not help. What would cause all of these components to NOT get power with the key in the "on" position? Could my ignition switch be at fault? Any advise would be grately appreciated. I need to get my "brick" running again.

turn the key on, do not start. check the power at fuses 11, 12 and 13. if there is no power, the ignition sw is dead. good luck, chuck.
On most DL there is a fast idle (also known as an anti diesel) solinoid on the intake just above the carburetor. This valve provides an air bleed that increases the idle speed, but when the engine is turned off will prevent engine run-on or deiseling. If this solinoid has failed, which is common, the engine will not idle because the idle is so low. You can either replace this solinoid or increase the idle speed.
On my 1981 DL I disabled the solinoid by unplugging it and then just increased the idle speed to the 750-800 rpm spec. runs great.
