'99 C70 - accessories delayed at startup??

Post by DenverC70 »

My car starts and runs perfectly, but on mornings where it is below about 25 degrees, all the accessories - headlights, heated seats - everything - stay off for maybe 5 seconds then suddenly come on. What causes that? I'm guessing something in the ignition switch because it has to be something common to everything and not some indviudal relay or fuse.

If it is the ignition switch, is that a simple DIY swap?

Gee....first time of heard of such. Wouldn't think that electricity is diverted to the ignition completely to start the car, but then again, this could be the way it was designed. Does anyone know?

I haven't heard of any system that would delay the accessories because the outside temp is low. If such a system was fitted I would have thought it would be mentioned in the owner's manual, but it isn't.

A check of the wiring diagrams does not show anything and my friendly Volvo tech has not come across this problem on any car.

A fault in the ignition switch is possible and it is not a hard job to change it, but I think further diagnosis is called for before going to that expense.

When it happens, wiggle the key in the ignition switch and see if the lights come on. The electrical portion of the ignition switch will cause this.

Also, there is generally a relay that switches off power to most accessories when cranking the engine, so that you have full power to the starter. It could be a problem with that relay. It is called the X circuit, or 30X I believe.

For sure it is not a feature that would be described in the owenwrs manual - it's not supposed to do it. It has only done it since last winter. I'll try wigglinghe key, but often the time is so shirt before everyhting comes on that I woudl not know if wiggling made any difference or not. This mornign it was aboout 36 degreees, and it took maybe two seconds. WHneitsd much colder it can be 5 seconds or more. So someting is sticking.
