94 850 Windshield wiper arm lifts off windshield

Post by lmalex »

Hello and thank you all for this terrific forum! I've sifted through various pages of topics but haven't seen this one yet. My 94 850's driver side windshield wiper arm lifts off the windshield at about the "1 o-clock" point of the cycle. I'm no mechanic but have "able" husband and good friend, who might be able to fix this if we have the right info. We had this adjusted by a local authorized mechanic company before but it "slips" back out over time. I don't want to keep paying a fortune to repair this. Any suggestions? Don't know if you need all of this to help, but the car's not a turbo style, has 78K+ miles on it, we bought it from a good friend who was updating to something with side airbags, and who kept its maintenance up reliably. We live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Many thanks for your help.

Hello:

The wiper arm lift is a very common problem for us. Try this:

I removed my wiper arm, took the blade out, and then bent it while laying it on the ground to contact more with the windshield. Took about 5 minutes of bending and checking to get it contacting the entire windshield.

Volvo (dealer) actually has a wiper angle tool, takes about a minute to do both blades.
It helps a bit for chattering but for your problem it should help a lot

I started my car, turned on the wipers and shut the car ignition off when the wiper was in the position of not touching the windshield. I then bent the lower part of the wiper arm until the blade was in contact with the winshield. Took about 30 seconds.

I looked at the Volvospeed link item and used the fix only to find the arm touching the windscreen seal at the stowed position... With a little careful application of insulation tape or some rag a pretty good fix can be achieved by use of two adjustables as pictured below by working one against the other (with little force)...
Right hand drive vehicle, but pretty easy to mirror the images in any photo app.
Before;

Push closest (spanner) toward windscreen whilst holding position with farthest (silver finish) adjustable...

PS Sorry about the dust, we just had our first rains in a long time in Adelaide... :D

I had a wiper arm lift issue on my 1995 850T. Reorienting the arm per volvospeed's idea helped a little. Ultimately, I decided the springs within the wiper arm had fatigued. New arm from FCP Groton was about $35, and the fix instant.
