Volvo Repair Database S80 Parking Brake Adjustment

Post by vegasjetskier »

This is for the 2001 S80 T6. I'm not sure what other years this may apply to.

Does your parking brake handle come up way too high when you apply it?

Does it not engage even when you pull the handle all the way up?

Here's how to adjust it. You will need a flat-bit screwdriver and a 10mm or adjustable wrench.

Open the console cover by pushing the small button to the far right in front of the cover edge and lifting up on the cover front edge.

Here's a closeup of the button to push, it's in the center of the photo.

Once you have the console open, pull the parking brake handle up. Look for a small slot in the back of the plastic portion of the parking brake handle cover. Insert your flat-bit screwdriver into the slot:

Apply slight pressure on the screwdriver handle towards the rear of the car to release the plastic retention tab. Lift up on the plastic portion of the cover and slide it over the handle. Let the leather portion of the cover turn inside out. It's not necessary to completely remove the cover from the handle, just pull it up enough to expose the white plastic adjuster shield.

Lower the handle all the way:

Now flip up the white plastic shield to expose the adjustment mechanism:

You will be adjusting the 10mm nut shown in this pic:

Use a 10mm or adjustable wrench to turn the nut: clockwise to tighten the cable and bring the engagement of the handle down; or counterclockwise to loosen the cable in case you've installed new parking brake shoes.

The parking brake should engage between 2 and 5 clicks up from the fully released position. Turn the nut a turn or two, then check the engagement. Repeat until the brake engages at the right place. Flip the white adjuster cover back down. Slide the brake handle cover back down over the handle and snap it into place on the console. Close the console cover. It's Miller Lite time!
