1985 760Turbo 185,000m (Fuel Pump Relay)

Post by turbo no/go »

What would it mean if the car wouldn't start try after try... and then I pulled the fuel pump relay, tried to start it w/relay out...and the car started and shut off after a few seconds...of course(no fuel).
I put the relay back in and it started and ran fine.
Just curious. This happened twice while the car was being difficult to start.
Obviously it only runs for a sec. with the relay out, but the fact that it started when I put it back in, but not the 15 tries before?
I might have just been a coincidence, but twice?
Thanks

Maybe, as you were pulling the relay out it triggered a spurt of gas.
Reinstalling established the connection again.
If thats what happened , the pins need cleaning a bit or get a spare just in case its gone intermittent.

My 86 245DL did this once, immediately after i bought it (right after i put the license plate on it, infact!)

I tried to start it to the point of discharging the battery, thinking it was just being hard to start for some reason. I called the guy I bought it from and had him come over to help, without much luck. Anyway, we called the guy that he bought it from, who was a former volvo mechanic, and he said to hit the fuel pump relay with a screwdriver a few times, or just smack it against the firewall a few times. Fixed it, didnt have the problem again until last week, and all I had to do was smack the black thing under the dash on the passenger side, approximately in the middle.

So, try hitting it hard with a screwdriver, have someone hold the relay while you turn the ignition on. They should feel and hear a very noticable click from the relay, if it's working. And of course, if it clicks, you should be able to start the car. If it clicks but still doesn't start, then it's something other than the relay (but you might have to let the car sit with the ignition on for 30 seconds or so before starting it, to make sure it has fuel all the way up the lines).

Anyway, even if this does fix it, i figure both of us are going to need a new relay eventually.

I put a multimeter on my pump wiring at the back end of the car (wagon)to see what happens, the relay clicks on for 2 seconds when the key switches ignition ON.
Then the relay clicks off.
If you crank the engine the pump comes back on again as long as the engine is turning. I believe it gets a run signal, via the ECU, from the crank sensor on top of the tranny flywheel.
Leaving ignition on won't generate extra fuel pressure.

To generate fuel pressure click the ignition on and off 3 times before cranking. If that helps the engine fire up its likely the crank sensor or ...more likely.... the pump/fuel filter.

Thats how I traced a bad pump anyways after eliminating everything else.
