S40 1.8i 1998 R, Central Locking Failure

Hi

I tried to lock my S40 1.8i (1998 R Plate), 78K Miles, with the central locking fob last night and the following happened:

The Lights flashed once (normal)
There was a noise as if the door has been locked (Normal)
The button stayed up (Abnormal)
The doors were still unlocked (Abnormal)

I then tried just using the key.

The button went down on the door but door was still unlocked

when i tried to unlock it again the button on the door did not rise.

Does anybody have any ideas what is wrong or how this can be resolved
