We have a 2000 S70 GLT SE and that portion of its SC-816 radio panel that displays station numbers does not illuminate at night. Numbers are visible in daylight but there is no lighted panel visible at night on which the numbers are displayed.
All other lights on the front panel of the radio work fine; in fact, this afternoon I happily followed instructions posted on this forum by Anthony to replace one of those other bulbs.
Is there a repair for the illumination of the LCD panel displaying station numbers at night? Or must we replace the radio.
I thank you in advancefor any assistance that may be offered.
David

If you're talking about the 1-6 buttons for the stations those are replaced just like the ones you already did...if you're talking about the LCD display, I've not read a fix for that...however, you could get a flexible light that plugs into the cigarette lighter receptacle right below the radio and use it to see....a nice one would be one with a switch built into the light head.

I thank you very kindly for your prompt reply.
I am addressing the LCD display and not the 1-6 buttons for the stations at the bottom of the front panel.
You have confirmed my suspicisions and I'll start the effort to locate a replacement radion.
Thank you again! I really do appreciate your time!

I know there is a writeup somewhere but I can't remember which board it is on, I looked around and I couldn't find it.
The display lamp is a little tough but certainly not impossible if you know how to solder.
There is a good writeup with pictures here that will get you most of the way there.

Once you have the radio removed and the faceplate off of it there are a few more steps to get to the display bulb.
As you look at picture number 7, the one that points out the socketed lamps, you should also see the back of the LCD display. If you turn the circuitboard over you will see that the LCD display is surrounded by a metal cover that is soldered into the back of the circuit board in either 2 places or 4 places. They are the large solder joints in the corner of the display in the picture.
On a few that I have repaired only two of those joints were soldered and the other two were a tab that fit through the PC board and then they were simply twisted. On others I found that they were all soldered.
Once you locate the corners of the metal cover and the corresponding large solder joints they need to be de-soldered and/or twisted so as to remove the metal cover.
At that point you should find, inset into the side of the display, a lamp with a blue plastic cover. From there you need to find the circuit board joints that correspond with the base of the lamp, there are two and they are right next to each other.
Unsolder those connections and remove the lamp.
You can replace the lamp with a radio shack bulb part number 272-1092, otherwise known as #7219 micro lamp. They cost under $2.00 for a 2 pack.
The bulbs are not exactly sized but the blue plastic filter will fit over them just fine and from there it is a matter of soldering the new bulb back in.
Re-assembly is the reverse of the disassembly.
If you decide to punt I would love to have a CD and I'll give your $10.00 plus freight.

Hey Lee, as always you come through.
I had not read about the back light.
Seems a bit difficult but not impossible.

Lee:
I took the radio out of the car and tried to get access to the lamp illuminating the station number panel. Made good progress but, with a wrong, clumsy handed move trying to take off the metal cover over the panel, to get at the bulb, I ruined the panel itself. It now has a nice smear showing on it.
Looks like I need to replace the radio.
I am grateful for your time and have noted your interest in it for parts. I would be happy to send this radio to you free of all charges. Please send me an email giving me your mailing address and I will try to do so.
Added thought: Any idea where I might be able to locate a replacement SC-816 radio short of contending with Ebay?
I thank you again. David
