Gas milage on an 86 245DL with B230F?

Post by leslie_s »

I'm getting about 20 mpg on my B230F equipped 86 245DL, with unknown milage (over 200,000) . Is this normal, or should I be getting more?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

"How many miles should I get to a gallon" are always difficult questions to answer. How do you drive - foot hard to the floor through every gear or a gentle acceleration? What sort of driving do you do mostly - town or highway? Is the gearbox manual or automatic? How well is the engine tuned?

They all make a difference

As UK gallons are bigger than US gallons I calculate you are getting about 24mpUKg. This is reasonable for a car of that age and weight.

I usually drive gently, but i floor it sometimes when i get onto the highway, depending on traffic and road conditions. It's an automatic. I don't know what you mean by how well is the engine tuned, since it has an LH-Jetronic EFI system?

In this context 'tuned' means the condition/age of the vital, renewable parts that keep the engine going - spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and air filter.

These are all parts that do lose their effectiveness over a period of time and may cause fuel consumption to increase.

Ah, all that stuff was there when i bought the car a few months ago. I plan on doing a tune-up in spring though.
