Rear end problem?
Rear end problem?
I recently purchased an 84 240 wagon. For the past few weeks there has been a loud banging noise from the back end when i take off from a stop or accelerate. It has become progressively worse. Yesterday I could not accelerate up even a mild incline and it sounded as if gears were not connecting properly. Even from a full stop now it will not move now. Just a whirring loud clicking sound from the rear end when i try to accelerate. One mechanic i spoke with things the four rubber bushings on the rear suspension might be the problem because there is some horizontal back and forth movement of the rear axil when up off the ground. But would this cause the problem I have?
Best thing to do is get your car up on a ramp or good jacks and start checking. There are a number of things that can click, bang and cause a whole chorus of noise. Check the drive shaft carrier bearing, its housing, U joints, panhard bar and the mentioned parts of the mechanic. Even the exhaust system on those cars goes out frequently and causes many strange noises. Muffler suspenders break.
Have fun looking.
