cylinder 5 misfire, 2001 v70-T5M - P0305

Post by justin21x »

Car has 105k miles, timing belt just done, put 100 miles on the car and P0305 comes up. The car ran great for the initial 100 miles, but I don't know if there is a connection between having the T-belt done and this misfire. CEL flashes a little and goes away, or just stays on. Flashes with higher revs. I tried switching the coils and the plugs (separately) but still have a problem with Cylinder 5. When pulling the coil connector for #5 the rpm does drop, so I'm thinking maybe a fouled injector? It seems that it's maybe spraying some fuel, but not enough, so I'm currently running a bottle of injector cleaner through it. The car now runs for crap through the RPM range. I do trust the mechanic but I know crap happens sometimes. I'd really prefer to not deal with the fuel system unless I have to. Can I check the power stage feeding the coils somehow? Anything else I can/should check? It doesn't produce codes other than P0305.

Thanks everybody!

Everything before the TB change was good?
TB change and now this?
I'd say they have the timing off a bit. Take it back and talk to them about it.

It was, everything ran fine before the t-belt and also after, for about 100 miles. If the timing were off it would have been from the start right? I should have noticed that when I left the parking lot of the shop, or could the timing have somehow gotten off after I left? I also didn't think it would affect only cylinder 5 if the timing were off, but I'm really not sure about that.

I just talked to the mechanic and he can't imagine that if the timing were off it only affecting cylinder 5. I'll be taking it back to him on Friday to take a look around. The only thing I could think of otherwise would be the injector. The mechanic, and also many posts here and across the other boards say the injectors rarely fail and to suspect the coil or plugs first (which I checked).

I agree, coil, wires or plug first but I wouldn't discount the timing. I'm thinking the tensioner wasn't right...but I could be wrong. These are adjusted depending on ambient temperature at the time of installation. If it were right for the first little bit, your outside temps may have changed since installation enough to make a difference? Anyway, you're taking it in. Hope they figure it out. And please, let us know what he finds.

MIJ, thanks so much for the replies. I'll definitely repost with whatever happened. The 100 miles put me at roughly the same time of day the next day as when the work was done. South Florida, there's not much of a climate change these days, mid to low 70s at night, and mid 80s as high. To be honest, I was just coming off the interstate after some slightly spirited driving when this happened. Nothing crazy, but certainly spirited. Thanks again. I'll post this weekend.

Cheers,
Justin

Okay guys, here's the part where I get embarrassed. I was checking the wrong #5. I was actually looking at the firing order and was actually checking #4, and had switched that coil and plug with #3 to test. Yup, just a coil. My fault for being lazy and not checking them all the first time, but .... excuses excuses.

Thanks all.

Glad you figured it out and it was nothing serious.
