88 Volvo 765 tic Air Bag Replacement
I am trying to replace the air bag on my 88 765 tic. My Haynes Manual does not cover this. I have not been able to remove the cover under the steering column. There is a tilt wheel latch on the left and ignition on the right. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. The air bag is the same on 740, 760, & 940.

This is a Volvo publication for that job. The steering column cover is held by two screws and two clips. The screws are underneath the cover recessed quite deeply in the holes you should be able to see if you look underneath. Contortionists can apply for this job. As far as I can remember the tilt latch is held by one screw.

Don't forget to disconnect the battery.
Bill.

Well I changed that airbag today. Took me 55 minutes to do it. The phillips head screws did not want to come out of steering column cover without pulling down on the cover to separate it from the top cover. The tilt lever set screw came right out with the allen key. The air bag screws was another story, There is no room to turn the T30 screwdriver and I had to clamp locking pliers on to the screwdriver and they kept slipping. The screws finally broke loose and I got the airbag out. The connector to the airbag was melted to the airbag and I had to ply it loose with a screwdriver, The connector was ruined so I wrapped tape around the connector and left it disconnected. I really do not care if the airbag is disabled I was only replacing it because it looked tacky with black duct tape covering the center of the steering wheel. I purchased the airbag used for $30. An airbag cover sells here for $75. So I came out with a steering wheel that looks good and an airbag that does not work
A person will need a T30 bit and an extension and ratchet to get those screws out without so much hassle.
