2001 S40 1.9L Turbo misfire query RESOLVED!

Post by drk5184 »

I am trying to track down the cause of a couple of misfire faults that I'm getting on my S40....I've got a little diagram as a PDF but I can't upload it so I'll do my best to explain what has happened in words.

I was getting a cylinder 1 and a cylinder 3 misfire fault from the computer. The car was also "chugging" at high revs (full throttle) but seemed fine at low revs.

I swapped the ignition modules (cylinder 3 to 4 and cylinder 4 to 3) and tested it again...this time I got a cylinder 1 and a cylinder 2 misfire fault.

I checked to make sure the plugs were all tight and I also greased the electrical connections to make sure that they were tight...I did notice, however, that the boot in cylinder 2 is discoloured (a "baked" light brown rather than the usual light grey).

Can anyone offer advice on where to go next.

Incidentally, I've posted a few times in the past 48 hours and I've received excellent (and quick) help so...thanks![/b]

You might have bad wires. Doesn't your car have ignition coil packs with 2 packs? 1 and 4 are shared by one pack and 2 and 3 are shared by the other? Like the diagram I posted on your other question. In other words, you can't just swap around the coil packs inadvertently. 1&4 are always connected as are 2&3.

When I swapped the position of the 2 coil packs I did not change the location of the wires (only the coils were changed) so 1 and 4 were connected and 2 and 3 were connected.

Ok, now I understand. I would say bad wires even though the coil packs might be ok. Do you have any friends with the same car that you can "borrow" their wires from and test again? I'm thinking that #1 is the bad one but why #2 also, I don't know.
