Volvo Repair Database Created an mp3 input for SC-816......

Post by lewismug »

Does anyone know the pinout for the power connector on an SC-816 stereo? I want to be able to connect it to a power supply in my electronics shop to make a few alterations. Thanks guys. Oh, and I did search, but came up with zilch on this particular connector. I just want to be able to power the stereo up while it is outside of my car.

I don't know -- but I respectfully ask that you make your subject lines a bit more meaningful; follow the accepted practice of at least giving a hint about your question. Year/Model would also be helpful (if applicable).

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip Chuck. I have corrected my post. Since I am asking about a stereo and gave the model of the stereo, I didn't include the year/model of my vehicle.

You can buy a ready made cable from the 816 to an aftermarket amp.
Is that what you want?

No, I'm actually going to tap into the cassette deck with a female headphone jack for my mp3 player and mount the jack in the face of my stereo in place of the i.r. sensor for the remote. The cassette adapter that I have been using is about ten years old and is beginning to sound like an old record player with all of the popping and hissing. I know several have done this with other stereos, but they said it couldn't be done with the 816. I just want to be absolutely sure. I think it can be done.

Well, I took out my DMM (digital multi meter) today and took the stereo apart. I found the right and left contacts for the tape deck and soldered my wires on. Connected up a 3.5mm jack and plugged everything in. Turned it on with a blank tape in the deck, turned on the mp3 player and have sound! :D There is a problem though. :( With the sound as low as it would go on the mp3 player and the car stereo at half throttle, everything sounds fine. Turn up the stereo or mp3 player from there and everything is distorted. I'm assuming that the mp3 player is overdriving the circuitry in the tape deck side of things and causing it to distort. I will try to put a few different value resistors in line with my mp3 connection and see if that calms things down a bit. Maybe if I can reduce the amount of energy going into the board from the mp3 player, then it will sound better. I have taken pics of the connections to solder into so far, so if any of you want those, let me know.

**UPDATE**

I added some resistors in line with my wires and lo and behold, I have GREAT SOUNDING MUSIC (The mp3 player was overdriving the circuitry and the resistors worked like a charm!) .....only on the passengers side though. :? My soldering skills aren't as good as they should be and one of them broke off. No worries though. I will re-solder everything in the morning and put the finishing touches on it!
