Transmission Fluid and Filter Change 2000 S80 T6

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Transmission Fluid and Filter Change 2000 S80 T6

Post by mwhitehead1 »

Using the link from this site on transmission fluid and filter change I changed both of these today. Took about 90 minutes and was not hard. Car has 135,000 miles with no transmission problems. Fluid looked good (did not smell burnt) draining out but the transmission filter was dirty (when I drained the filter the fluid in there was very dark). There was also some slight buildup in the bottom of the pan and on the magnets- expected.

Suprisingly, I got the filter from O'Reilly's Auto Parts (Brand was Pioneer- Part #745036) for a little under $13.00. It was an exact replacement- inlcuded a new seal (which I didn't use- left the old one on there) and gasket (which I didn't use either- reused the one that came off). I used almost 2 gallons of Walmart's Supertech Dexron III fluid at a little under $8 a gallon.

I did have to pry the filter off (gently) with a flat-bladed screwdriver where the filter is inserted at the seal :) :) :) . I was not able to work it loose by pulling with my hands (as the link says).

I think your transmission is different than other P2's but just make sure the Dexron III is the right fluid for your car. Otherwise, good job. I hope this takes care of you for at least another 30-35K miles (when you should change it now that you've began taking care of your transmission).

Actually, we bought the car used with 105,000 miles. The person we bought it from said he had used the local Volvo dealer for regular service so I hope it has been changed at least once. The transmission is extremely smooth shifting and I want to keep it that way. The owners manual said Dexron III is what is needed- no problems since the change. I read somewhere that this transmission is made by General Motors- is that true????

I'm not sure about GM building the 4T65EV-GT but they did build a 4T65E for use on their own vehicles between 1994 & 2003.

Yes, GM did build some of the transmissions for the S80...don't know which ones.
