S60 vs S80
S60 vs S80
So now that the two models have been out for awhile, I'm curious if those who have owned either or both would like to chime in on which one a potential buyer would be better off looking at. While I'm still happy with the ol' 93 850, I'll probably be looking to update in another 6 months and I'm kinda interested in the newer body styles of the S lineup. What exactly are the issues that a person needs to go screaming into the night about for each?

Newer models are about the same as far as reliability.
The older '99-'01 S80 were plagued with lots of issues, especially electrical problems. Avoid the '99 for sure. The newer the better on both cars. If you're going from an 850 sedan I would personally go with an S60.

Don't get a '99 S80. My dad has one. They have many problems. Search for my posts in the S80 forum for details.

I will make this simple, stay away from ALL T6's.Maxbaby wrote:I'm glad you mention the '99 S80 in particular because I was just looking at one. Any other thoughts out there?
You should stay away from 99 thru 02-1/2 S80's, They became much better with the 03 model and MUCH better in 04-06.
Stay away from any 2001 S70 or V70 that's an automatic but you should really stay away from 01's in general.
It's a 1st year car that was plagued with many problems.
For some reason Volvo had a problem getting the S80 to become a decent car.
2004 was when they became as good ( or maybe a bit better
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

I bought one of the very early S60s: a 5-speed. It was a wonderful car with very few problems. The front ends are kind of normal wear and tear items and need periodic work, but otherwise it was one of the best-driving vehicles I've ever owned.
I know absolutely nothing about S80s.
My $0.02.

04 V70 (also a pretty good car)
