S70 Non-turbo performance ....WOW

Post by bigfinn »

If you are new to the Volvo S70 club like I am, and have a non-turbo, and want more get up and go to your car....read on. I have had my car now for 4 months, and have been trying everything and anything to get more HP and increased gas mileage. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact I drive a 10 year old car that has zero rust, great styling, and a roomy comfortable interior. (I'm 6'3")

I've done numerous maintenance and upgrades due to this forum...so thanks to everyone out there. Here's a list of what has been done.

Transmission fluid drain & fill (5 times...139,000 miles)
Oil change...Mobil 1
K&N air filter
Sylvania silverstar headlight bulbs (great to see at night!)
Antenna mast replacement (easy)
New spark plugs (Volvo plugs from FGP Groton)
Upper and lower engine mounts (both needed badly)
Seafoam engine treatment (intake only)
Cleaned MAF sensor
Replace wiper blades (Bosch..their best ones..no streaking)
Tinted the windows (35 on sides, 50 on back window)

But the most recent maintenance has made me appreciate my car's performance to the max.

Modify the air box thermostat so only cold air comes in!......WOW, what a difference...I no longer feel like I am driving an old man's car...(the thermostat had failed, and only hot air was entering entering the engine).

Clean the flame trap and the throttle body! I just completed the cleaning, and noticed even better acceleration, as well as a smoother idle.

Next on my agenda will be to replace the entire PVC system, as well as new rotor, distributor cap, and wires.

Hope this info gives other non-turbo owners some tips on increased production on their S70. Thanks to all for their input on this site.

Did you notice any major change after you seafomed your car?

For me the greatest improvements were the K&N air filter and having the fuel injectors cleaned. Pulled them and shipped the off for a professional cleaning. Very noticeable change. Everything smoothed out.

But then again every little bit helped. Though my gas milage still is on the low side. I have a gas line to replace and I will try the Seafoam. Nothing to loose, I guess.

The only thing that I noticed with seafoam was all the smoke and carbon coming out of my exhaust. I actually had black particles shoot out the exhaust onto my cement driveway. No noticable change in performance, only used it through the intake. Plan to use it in the crankcase just before my next oil change. I have read that other users of seafoam report better compression. No harmful effects.
