concern after major accident

Post by John Evans »

We have a 2002 XC70, we have had it since new,90000kms on the clock
perfect condition.,until yesterday.
My wife was driving with my daughter in the car, they stopped at a pedestrian crossing with one car in front of them. They were then hit from behind by a 6 ton truck doing 60 kph.
They got out unscathed fortunately, the car did its job brilliantly protecting the passengers.
The car is badly damaged about 15cm shorter all squashed up to the A pillars. The back guards are rubbing on the tyres, the back doors won`t open. Both front seats in a reclined position after performing their brilliant protection job. But not written off!
MY QUESTION: When its repaired will it be capable of offering the same protection? Will the seats offer the same brilliant whip lash protection? Do they need to be replaced?
The car is insured for $36000 au, slightly above market value.
Thanks for your advice and knowledge in advance.

I would contest that...likely the car will never drive the same. Also I have my doubts that it will protect the same as before. Others will no doubt have other opinions.

My relatives had a similar experience. They had just bought a new 740 and got into a front end collision. The body shop was able to make it look like new again, however every few months, the water pump would always fail, so like MIJ said, it may never drive the same again.

A latent problem with accidents are the electronics. Those relays in the rear quarter panel will have a shorter life due to the shock they received. When my electronic part failed post accident by 30 days, the insurance paid for half, after I showed them it was in the accident zone.

Recheck your market value (private sale). Resale prices of cars are dropping a lot, due to many factors. You can accept the repair value, plus sales tax (VAT) if don't want the car anymore.
