1994 850 Wag Eng cutting out when car is warmed up/Fuel low

Post by hhk-nc »

Dear Volvo Experts,
I first saw this problem about a year back. My communte is pretty short and this happens only on a hot day. Engine turns off for a few seconds after it has been running for around 15 min or so and then starts up again. It happened when fuel tank had around 2 Gal. I kept the tank around 6 Gal + and did not see this. Did not have any problem during the winters. About 2 days back when it was pretty hot here I hit this problem again. Any ideas what will help in this case. I have already replaced the fuel filter.

This is a 5 speed stick shift Wagon with 165K miles

Thanks
Hasan

My fist guess is the fuel pump relay. When they start to go bad they get erratic when the temperature either gets hotter or colder. The next time it gives you trouble listen for the fuel pump behind the rear seat.

I have sort of the same issue, but I didn't see it correlating to how much fuel I had in the tank. Just every once in a while while driving the engine would cut out and start back up 30 seconds later.

I ended up replacing my FPR because I could smell gas when I disconnected the vacuum line. This seemed to fix the problem for a couple months. It recently started happening again and I'm leaning towards the Fuel pump relay because the fuel pump was replaced about 20K miles ago.

Thanks Guys, The fuel level might just be coincidence. However I am sure it has never happened in cold weather. Where is the fuel pump relay located ??. Can I spray some contact cleaner an be done with ??

Thanks
Hasan

Here are some directions to replacing.

You can try the contact cleaner, but if the relay it old it seems to be the popular thing to just replace it. If anything it would rule out the relay if the problem continues. It's not too expensive at FCP ($45)
