Hello there,

This weekend, I'm planning on doing an oil change on the Volvo. As well as drain and fill of the engine coolant with some Prestone 50/50 stuff. I had topped it off a few weeks ago with the Prestone, but I'm thinking a drain/fill is in order as I'm not sure the last time it was done. I'm ordering a Mann filter and a new plug gasket from ipd, and was wondering what the best kind of oil would be to use? I know that synthetic probably is not a good idea for an older car

I use 10-30 , I don't know if thats a good weight but I know its better than no oil.!

A good flush helps the system,
I start with cold engine , turn the car heater on,
feed warm water from hose ,
open the drain on the block and start it up,
keep going til it runs clear then close drain and tank and bring up to temp and leave it to cool.

When cool drain again and fill with coolant.
Bleed air from system by squeezing the rad hoses to 'burp' the air pockets out, watch the coolant level as you do this, keep topping up til it doesn't drop any more., do this to a warm engine with the thermostat open and heater valve open (heat on) to get all air out.

Don't overdo the oil drain plug or it will get stuck in there, the torque is quite low, just compress the copper washer to seal (like a sparkplug),

then with oil filter, wet rubber seal with oil and install hand tight only!

I have a few questions though.
When you feed the water from the hose, do you just run that into the overflow tank? Also, when you say start it up, I'm guessing you mean have the garden hose pumping water into the tank, open the drain, and then turn on the car?

Also I'm buying a magnetic oil drain plug from ipd. How do I go about compressing the little copper seal?

Wherabouts in Boston are you, I'm only about 40minutes north.

I loosened the drain valve under the exh manifold to get a good stream and started the engine and kept the fluid level up with the hose in the coolant tank, the coolant tank is part of the pressurized system, not like the overflow on my ford van.
Overflows on many cars aren't part of the pressurized system,
but the volvo coolant cap is the system pressure cap.

Do the oil drain plug like a sparkplug, the copper washers can be reused by annealing the copper, heat cherry red then drop in cold water.

I suggest synthetic oil, if your car is not an oil burner nor an oil leaker.
