Front doors won't open from inside. 1996 Volvo 850

Post by mgreenhaus »

Last week both of the front doors on my 1996 Volvo 850 stopped opening from inside. They work fine from outside and respond to key and inside lock switch. This is obviously a problem as I have to lower window to get out of car. It is annoying and dangerous.

How odd that they both quit at the same time. The inside door release actuates a lever that goes to the door lock mechanism and obviously something came disconnected there. There is a clip that holds the lever to the latch mechanism and that may have broken. The only way to know for sure is to remove the door panels and inspect the mechanism.

Check the child safety door secure latch. It might be stuck in the child safety position to prevent kids from opening the door and falling out while the vehicle is under motion. Try switching it to the non-child safe position. If it won't budge, try spraying some WD-40 on it and gently pursuading it with a screwdriver. If it is broken, then you'll need to disassemble the door and replacing the part.

The latch is on the door itself where the door meets the car (not the hinge side). Up is safe and down is unsafe. I believe your is stuck in the up position.

Please return the favor and answer my question:

Unless this car is very different from my 850s there are no child safety latches on the front doors.

+1 on that door latch issue, must be a common problem.

I have the same problem on my passenger side, I have to walk around to let my wife out. I may not fix it as she likes the extra attention...
she thinks I'm being chivalrous... :D
I don't want her to think differently but i still need to fix the door latch release mechanism.
1998 V70 base -work in progress...

145k miles, and going strong!

Please be nice to me, I'm a Noob!
