late upshifts, always in one gear too low '94 940 turbo

Post by skittlejr »

started a week ago intermittent, this morning permanent. have to rev almost to red line before tranny will upshift. i did some searching and was reading about the kickdown cable. does a '94 have one? it shifts good when it shifts so i am not worried that this is a major tranny issue. the tachometer has been jumping a little in the morning when everything is cold, (not because the engine rpms were jumping, it was steady) but it only lasts a couple of minutes then matches up with the engine. thanks

I have no idea of how your car is set up, but this is my experience.
I've had that problem a few times with 240's and it was the kick down cable. See if you can find the cable that comes from the gas pedal. There will be one or two other cables attached to the same wheel. One will be the kick down cable and if it's stuck or broken there will normally be some slack in it. If there's slack try pulling it a little and let it snap back. If it snaps back you will then shift okay, but the problem will come back.
If you get it to snap back and it shifts okay at this point you can disconnect it, replace it or be engenious and try lubing it.

ok, thanks, i will look for it. i do know that there is another cable on the wheel other than the pedal cable, i hope that is it. i wasn't sure if a '94 had this because i don't know if the transmission is electronically controlled or not. from reading around the forum about this, i think this is the problem. also to support this is that the first few times this happened was right after a full opening of the throttle then it would go away after a couple of minutes. thanks for the reply
