Reco - Independent Volvo mechanic Chicago NorthWest 'burbs

Post by aj98s70 »

Hi All,
Could somebody recommend an independent shop/mechanic for my newly acquired 98 s70 with 72k miles.

Love the car !! But the Check Engine Light came on last week.

Any location close to the Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect area would be ideal.

Thanks in Advance.

regards....

Does the car run normally or is there anything that is out of the ordinary?

I can't help with a local mechanic but...

AutoZone and a few other parts houses will pull codes for free. If you have Emissions check stations that pull OBDII codes as part of the inspection they will typically pull and reset codes for a nominal fee - here in Atlanta the going rate is $10-20.

Order item 46030-1VGA UNIVERSAL CODE READER from www.harborfreight.com for $39 (picked this info from OZBrick - I would rather pull my own codes without relying on enybody else). It will read codes by flashing a LED and reset the code after it has been displayed 4 times. It will not reset the service light. Or get a more advanced model by clicking on one of Matthew's ads just below the banner.

Good Luck,

Tsquared,
Thanks for the quick reply.
i will take your advice and take it to an AutoZone and have the codes read. The Volvo dealership wants to charge $50 for the service.

The car shows no perceptible signs of any problems - the engine runs smooth and the car drives good. I also checked to make sure the gas cap was screwed on tight. The person I bought it from said he changed the o2 sensors recently - apparently a common problem in the s70s. I just ordered a new set of OEM plugs that I am going to install in the next few days.

On a related note, is there a DIY publication for changing spark plugs ?

Thanks again for the info.

I can't find a how-to on a spark plug change. It is a fairly strait forward procedure on the 96 850 and shouldn't be much different. Remove the torx screws on the top cover, remove spark plug boot, remove plug, take new plug with a dab of anti-sieze on the threads and install. Perform for all 5 plugs and replace top cover. Sorry I don't have tourque values...

You can go to www.amazon.com and perform a search on "volvo s70". The search will show "Volvo S70, C70 and V70 Service and Repair Manual: 1996-1999 (P to V) (Haynes Service and Repair Manuals)" for about $30. It is a good resource for many of the how-to procedures and the recomended service schedules.

Cheers,

Swedish Engineering or sumthin like that in Schaumburg. He is an IPD dealer and repair shop. The IPD website can give you the exact name and address. Very nice to do business with, honest and smart.
