Autodim mirror replacement

Post by GST »

On my just-bought 2001 V70 T5, the autodim rearview mirror isn't working -- fluid floating inside makes a line straight across. It isn't unsafe, just annoying. When I took off the mirror, unplugged it and tried to install the old mirror from my 850 that I just junked, not only did it not fit with the newer dome light assembly, none of the lights or the sunroof worked. I realized that the electronic mirror must complete a circuit or something, so I put it back on and am still driving around with it.

Do I have to replace it with another autodim mirror or is there a way that I can rig it to install a normal mirror? That's what I'd rather have, anyway.

Thanks,
GST

You'll have to replace it with the same part number, then the dealer will have to "marry" it to your car with software....it, I believe also completes the circuit for the anti-theft device in your car. What you can do in the meantime is get one of those wide-angle mirrors that sort of strap-on over your existing, broken one.

It looks like the dealer needs to do a "UEM Reload"...it's not so much a marriage as the fact that the UEM, integrated into the rearview mirror (you can thank Magna Donnelly for that stupid design!), doesn't have software loaded on it when it's shipped from Volvo. $30.00 for the software, probably an hour labor.

Is the mirror tied to the siren?

If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can just change out the mirror lens and resolder it to your existing circuit board in your mirror. If you go this route, you don't even need to go to the dealer for reprogramming. I did this repair a few years back on my 2001 V70 T5. I picked-up a compatible used mirror from the junkyard (S60 or V70 will do, check PN's) and then did the repair. I believe there is a "how to do this" available. Can't remember if I found it in this web site or on youtube. Check the S80 "how to" section also.

Just another option for you. I really hated the mirror as a lava lamp, and since I did the repair, it's great having a functional rear view mirror and all electronics working properly.

Good luck.
