87 240 DL is driving me crazy
I was driving my 87 240 DL day before yesterday when it spontaneously died. It tries to turn over - and it's getting fire so I went to replace the fuel pump. I ended up replacing both internal and external fuel pumps as well as the fuel filter and still nothing. The engine just isn't getting any fuel. Any ideas?
Your symptoms sound very much like a broken or skipped timing belt.
Check the timing belt before you spend more money on expensive fuel pumps.

This is the timing belt, it is located behind the plastic cover and drives the camshaft. This belt should be replaced every 60,000 km. It is not to be confused with your accesory belts that drive the waterpump, alternator, P/S pump or A/C

Prior to 1989 there is a fuse under the hood which can cause all kinds of engine performance problems, including stalling, hard-starting and no-start. If your 240 has one, it will be mounted on the inside fender on the driver's side, by the ignition coil. It's a 2-terminal spade plug-in type, usually 25 amps. Pull it out, spray the socket with the contact cleaner. Spray some of the cleaner on a rag and rub the fuse terminals until they shine. If the fuse terminals won't clean-up then buy a new fuse (auto parts store). Plug-in & remove the fuse several times to thoroughly clean the socket surfaces.

I almost forgot, the elusive cause of many unexplained stalling or no-start problems on the later 240
