2001 S40 Reliability/issues??

Post by redbrick »

I have never followed the S40 series cars, all of mine are bigger bricks. But, Volvo-mania has been passed along to my son's girlfriend. She wants to buy an S40.

What are some issues/concerns/points to consider when shopping for an S40. I seem to recall some engine issues in the early ones? I also seem to recall electrical problems. Can anyone offer advise?

Thanks.

Folks, if this was a question about a V70 I would have a list about a mile long including ABS, Front Ends, Trannies, ETM, etc. etc.

I did read through some reports of problems here that apply to this model but it's hard to tell if these are common, unique, etc. I also read some horror story reviews about engine, electrical etc. but it's very hard to tell if the only reviewers are sour grapes whiners.

I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone that is familiar with these cars

I don't recall the "typical" problems with this model. Just make sure that it's checked out ok and that there are service records. My brother-in-law owns an '04 S40 (last of the same design as the '01) and loves it but I believe by then all of the "so called" kinks were ironed out. Of course, if she has more $$ and can afford the newest design ('04.5 and newer) she would most likely be happier over-all.

Thanks for the input. The 2001 she was looking at was sold so it's back to searching. I think she is trying to keep the investment low so I'm not sure how new she can afford. Agree that newer should be better.
My wife and I looked at the V50, cute, fun....too small for all of my dogs in the back though. The V70 stays in the fleet as the "dog mobile".
