940 1995 Volvo won't start!!!

Post by okeetee »

My wife pulled the car up into the driveway, it was running well, no hesitation, good power.....and when she went to pull out again, the car wouldn't start! I troubleshooted it the best I could with my shade tree mechanic (a good one!) and we discovered its not spark or ignition but a fuel problem. We can't hear the Fuel pump come on when we turn the ignition key...so we think it may be associated with a fuse or relay. We checked the fuses for the fuel pump and they were good. What are the chances it could be the fuel pump relay or possibly the pressure regulator? Everything was working fine up until the moment my wife pulled the car into the driveway and turned the engine off! Is it also possible the crank position sensor may have gone bad? What would you do short of taking the car into the dealer?

If my wife broke the car I would stop her driving it.

On a serious note have you a check engine light showing?

It is possible that the fuel pump relay is playing up. It is in the second row of relays on the left. Sometimes if you give it a hard flick with your finger it will revive itself long enough to get the engine going and, sometimes even longer.

Also check for fault codes with the on-board diagnostic unit in the engine compartment. If the CPS has gone bad it will log a code.

...well, that's the funny thing.....no "check engine" light comes on! So I don't think there is a code to read at this time. If it was the relay for the fuel pump would the check engine light come on? Of course, not being able to start the car makes that diagnosis somewhat difficult, right?

The relay would not set the check engine light.

You run the diagnostics without the engine running.

This is how to use the OBD for your car as well as the 240 and 740. If you don't have a turbo the codes may vary slightly but the method is the same:

....Big Bill! Check this out! I replaced the fuel injection relay with a new volvo genuine part....and it still didn't crank the car! So I had it towed to the car repair shop.....and left. They called me 10 minutes later and said the car started right up when they went to test it! They ran it for 30 minutes....turn it off....and it started right up again! I took it for a test drive...ran the air conditioner.....there is no hesitation....it runs perfect......drove back to the shop....turned off the car....and it started right up, no problem! So, I'm at a quandary as to what to do! You mentioned checking codes....I can do that on this 940 turbo model 1995, correct? The shop guy was thinking it might be some problem with the fuel pump or a bad connection somewhere. But it should show up in the code check, right? I'm wondering if it just may have been a clogged gas filter that got unclogged. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

If there is no code now, drive it until it does it again and then check your codes.

...update on this "mysterious" problem! Drove the car home tonight...washed it....tried to start it again....it wouldn't start! So, google searched more volvo sites and found one where a guy had the exact same problem as me with all the various symptoms and for him it ended up being the fuel pressure regulator! So, it has to be either that or possibly the CP sensor....but my symptoms are more in line with it being the fuel pressure regulator. I'm going to buy both tomorrow and have my shade tree mechanic put the fuel pressure regulator in first. Here's the link to the other guys identical problem as mine. My mechanic will also check the codes to see if any have shown up.
