Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me. I just got a '89 740 and the electronic Overdrive has been disconnected. There are two cables coming out of the shifter housing but I'm not sure where each one connects to the OD button.
Also, the reverse tab has been disconnected... two easy fixes but I would greatly appreciate some help! Thanks!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Is this automatic or manual transmission?
It does not matter which contact takes which cable as it is a simple on/off switch. Obviously, however, the cables have been disconnected for a reason and you may find that even with them reconnected your overdrive does not work. Usually with these units it is an easy fix.
It may be a difference in Transatlantic terminology but I am not sure what the reverse tab is.
Bill.

Thanks for that!
Its a manual transmission. The mechanism I'm talking about is on the shifter that you have to lift up which enables you to shift into reverse. I'm assuming this is another simple thing to do.

Two countries separated by an ocean and a common language. Over here it is the reverse detent.
The best picture I can come up with is from VADIS showing the gear shift 'blown apart'.
If, as seems likely, someone has had the lever out for any reason it is possible that part #16 has not been re-connected with the pin #19 or it is broken. The only other thing that could be wrong is the detent needs adjusting. If you need instructions for that I have them.

Would anyone happen to have a "pull-rod" (part 16 in the diagram above) that I would take off your hands or could you point me in the right direction of where I could get one? I found that the one inside of mine was broken in multiple places. Any help would be much appreciated!

As your car has overdrive you need to remove the trim panel from the side of the centre console. My instructions are for RHD cars and the trim panel is the right hand side one. On LHD cars it may be the left trim panel. This exposes the overdrive wiring connector. Separate the connector and tie a piece of string to the wire leading to the gear lever.
Remove the gear lever boot.
Drive out the roll pin which secures the lever to the stub.
Lift off the gear lever, at the same time pulling the overdrive wire and string through. Untie the string.
Remove the overdrive switch by prising the trim plate from the top of the gear lever knob, prising out the switch and disconnecting it.
To remove the gear lever knob grip the lever body in a soft-jawed vice, put an open ended spanner at the base of the knob and tap the spanner with a soft hammer. The knob is glued onto splines and may not come off undamaged. Clean any old glue off the splines.
Remove the old pullrod. If it is metal remove it by undoing the grub screw at the top of the lever and withdraw the pullrod,. spring and interlock sleeve downwards. If it is plastic release the catch at the base and lift up the collar slightly to free the top of the rod.
Soak the new pullrod in water for 1 hour before fitting it - don't ask why as I don't know!! On overdrive models the new rod is fitted from below. Take care not to displace the rubber bushes and wiring. Make sure it engages with the collar. Position the pullrod bottom lug to receive the interlock sleeve.
Fit the spring and interlock sleeve, engaging the pullrod lug in the catch on the sleeve.
Refit the knob on the splines , using a little mild glue to enable easy removal if needed in future.
Reconnect the overdrive switch and put it back into the gear lever knob.
Reattach the string to the wire and refit the lever to the stub at the same time drawing the wire back to the centre console. Fit the roll pin.
Reconnect the wiring and refit the trim panel.
