V40 T4 running rough

I've recently bought a 1998 V40 T4 which is a revelation after the Saab 900 I've been running for the last year. Seemed odd that it came with a full tank of fuel, but today everything became clear. It started to stutter a little, and over the next 40 miles this got worse and worse until it wouldn't go over about 30mph. It idled perfectly, but as soon as I tried to drive it, it would barely go. It suddenly occurred to me that it might be the petrol level (it was about 1/4 to 1/3 full) and sure enough

Or....the previous owner let the car sit with a partial tank of gas for a long time...thus the gas in the tank became tainted...adding some gas helped but if the gas absorbed some water (as they often will do if they sit for a long time, especially out side), then draining the tank, changing the fuel filter and filling up again may solve your problems entirely.
