Volvo Repair Database Volvo 960 & passing state emissions inspection

Post by mizclark06 »

I don't know if you guys want to make this a sticky or not, but I had some trouble getting my 1997 960 to pass the state emissions inspection a few days ago.

I noticed a DPS posting on the wall (after my third trip--I had to show the service tech ) that all 1997 and 1998 Volvos may cause a 'not complete' or 'not available' reading during the preliminary OBD-III scan and cause it to fail. DO NOT let them take your money! It won't pass. Go to your nearest Volvo dealer or experienced Volvo technician with the ability to do the inspection.

I recommend A & A Service Center on Colorado Ln ( and U.S. 157/ S. Cooper St. directly across from the Krispy Kreme). These guys really know their stuff! They didn't say a word to me about why it 'wouldn't' pass, before I drove away with my nice new sticker!

These guys ALWAYS have some kind of Volvo parked out front they're working on and my MIL sends all of her customers here. Otherwise your choices are the Volvo dealers in Irving or far west Fort Worth.

A good point. I am glad our emissions testing is not that rigorous.

Alternately, you could stop in our shop in Richardson, just before you get to plano on 75. Our inspection techs have 30+ years with Volvo, and if it's to be known, they know it.

Just an option.

Or you can go to a county that does not do emmison inspection and have your car inspected. All you have to do is tell the inspector that you have emmision test done back at your home county asap.............

I don't know what state you're in, but in the ones that I'm familiar with that require an emissions inspection, the paperwork for the emissions test must be submitted to the DMV to get new tags. So just going to another county isn't going to help you.

Not that easy...

I travel between Harris and Tarrant counties all the time, tried to inspect one of my vehicles when out of town and you must inspect it in the county it is registered. Unless the laws have changed.

When I first purchased my V90 it did not complete the OBD2 scanning at the facilities. No idea why, but now it does just fine. And the craziest thing? The dealer here in Houston that did some work on it for me, Momentum I believe, was not able to inspect it. They said the vehicle was too old. I laughed and went down the street to my inspection/car wash and had it completed.
I own about 14 vehicles.
One is a Volvo.

Not only do you have to have your car inspect in the same county you live in if your caught going to a diffrent county with no emmison inspection(rare but it happens) its a pretty nasty fine and the shop that gave you said inspection sticker will lose there licence. Best thing to do is either A. Take it to a vailid Volvo mech. or B. >.> Look for one of the "cheap" places in your county and hope all he/she does is turn on your head lights, honk your horn, drive forward, drive backword. <.< Some of the smaller shops in Burleson and Crowley and even dfw all they do is hook the exaust up to a perfect car and get your readings that away

In Arizona, the Drive Cycle for the my S90 could not be completed. I tried for more than 2 months with over 2000
miles logged. I thought this would cost me hundreds to get fixed, but took a chance & ran it through the emissions
station in Mesa AZ. Failed! I talked to the supervisor and after some discussion she said "Oh this is a Volvo!" She then leafed
through a loose leaf binder and informed me that "All '96-'98" Volvos may have difficulty completing the drive cycle and will be
unable to be tested" She then asked me to pay a second $27.50 (since I had gone beyond the 60 free retest time frame)
and told me to pull into the 4th bay. Once there, they scanned my door label and then gave me a passing certificate.
No additional testing was done. Thank goodness, I got my car licensed! This may apply to other states but I don't know.
It might help some of you in Arizona.

you will need to re-register an automobile in the state where there's no inspection if you have buddies or relatives there. I know of WI, SC, AK... maybe more that would not require any inspection.
