'94 850 Turbo -Universal vs. OE fit O2 Sensors (both Bosch)

Post by bonmictx »

Hi - I need to replace the front O2 sensor on my 94 850 Turbo, and found one at Autozone that is a universal, made by Bosch, for half the price of the OE fit one. I'm guessing that the universal one might be a little more work to install, which is not a problem for my mechanic friend. Is there any reason I shouldn't go for the less expensive option?

Thanks!

Michelle

Some have had good success (I believe Lee has) but most others not....so I'll let others post with their opinions. Mine is to stay with OEM... check out www.fcpgroton.com eeuroparts.com and google for arizona autohaus as these had the best prices on OEM that I remember.

I haven't had to change any of mine yet but I think I will need to soon on my son's '96. From what I have read there have been mixed results but I think many of the problems have been due to the "Quick Connect" splice box that they supply with the universal version - the rest of the specs look the same from the Bosch web site.

I may try the universal version but I will solder and heat shrink the wires if I go that route.

the only thing I would buy at autozone is oil and washer fluid ....and that's only if it was on sale

If by universal you are referring to something like an NGK, etc... then by all means use one but be prepared to have to splice and solder to make things work.

For me, I'd always rather get the best o2 sensor I possibly can simply because of the benefits of a good one.

For instance you may save $50 now or even $100 now; but by the end of a 12 month period your lack of power, effeciency, fuel conservation, etc, may mean that you will spend more than $100 in fuel, maintenance, etc. There is also that last little thing called "peace of mind"; for most intents and purposes, this is priceless.

my 2 cents.
Mike.
