My new (used) Volvo V70 (2005; 2.4; 40K miles)

Post by PentaxGuy »

Hi,
I bought a used 2005 V70 last week for $16.5K. It is a V70 with only 40K miles. It has the standard 2.4L engine. It has been used as a rental, and seems to be in ok condition. I took it to the Volvo dealership who said it checked out fine and changed its oil, and the Carfax records (for what they are worth) check out too. The only things I had to fix were the front door gaskets (the soft rubber spongy weather sealing) were coming off the rim of the door, and the windshield wiper nozzles were clogged with dirt. This car came with a moonroof, wood trim, power chairs, heated leather seats etc which I really don't need but they came with the car.

I got this car mainly because I have two dogs, and I wanted a wagon to load them up in the back. I got online a steel cargo barrier and a mat for the back, so the big dog does not climb up front. Would I need anything else?

Is there anything I should do or watch out for, regarding maintenance or reliability issues? I haven't had this car long enough to know what's normal for it (I had my previous Honda Civic for 11 yrs and had a lot more tactile feedback with that one - call it road feel or road noise, but this car maybe too comfortable). The trip computer with the instantaneous mileage also seems to be curing my lead foot.

I am in the South-eastern US, so it is not too cold, but it can be hot or wet. I notice a "W" button next to the gear shift - is it usual to engage it whenever it rains, or only for icy conditions?

Welcome to MVS.
I also live in the south east so I'd say your wagon is good to go!
Just make sure it has decent tires. Another thing I notice about owners with dogs, the plastic area on the bumper that the dog's will climb on to get into the car often get really scratched up...and with those who have owned dogs you can really tell- the scratches are sometimes deep from the dog's nails. I would find something to lay over that area as they get in and out to keep the bumper area from getting scuffed. Certainly this will help on the resale value when and if you decide to sell this car. Btw, I'm of the opinion that these V70's get better and better each year of production. We have an '04 and love it and it's been uber reliable. I'd expect the same for yours! Congrats on a great buy.

Use it in winter conditions only when you are stuck in snow/ice to get out of difficulties. As soon as you are moving again go back to your normal setting.
