V40 S 2001 tapping from engine – been like it for years!

Post by rhayter »

Hi Volvo sages.

I've had a V40 S for the last four years (bought on 88,000 miles, now on 118,600) that's been exceedingly reliable mechanically. All the servicing up to when I bought it was carried out by Volvo dealers and the timing belt was changed at 67,000 miles. There has always been a combined tapping/whirring sound from the engine bay, which I assumed was a trait of this car (both my brother, who is a Gold Certified MOT inspector/mechanic and a mechanic at the garage where the car has been serviced for the last 4 years have told me its nothing to be concerned about). The sound is inaudible when you're in the car, driving.

Now I'm selling the car, my buyer – who has given me a deposit – expressed concern about the noise and has used some online forums (unnamed) to uncover that's it a problem with the VVT and needs "needs to be replaced along with the pulley, Gasket, camshaft belt and tension pulley." And that a Volvo garage has quoted him £600-700 for the work. I'm only selling the car for £1000 and my buyer wants more money off!

Can anybody suggest if this is the problem? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to MVS. I really don't know much about your car- if you want, get an independent mechanic to check it out...depending, hold to your guns and don't sell if for any less than your predetermined lowest price. Some engines are just noisier and don't mean anything- however some engines sound loud and do have issue. Like I said, I don't know enough about yours to render a judgment.
