94 850 Turbo turned itself off (on the freeway!)

Post by bonmictx »

Today I was driving to work on the freeway, doing about 65 mph, when my 850 lost power. It was so smooth, I didn't notice it at first -no stumbling, sputtering, bucking, or cutting out - just no power when I pressed the accelerator. The battery light flashed a few times and then stayed on, while I coasted to the shoulder (no fun in Dallas rush hour traffic!) I was able to restart it, made it to work, and drove it at lunch with no more problems, but now I'm nervous.

I would appreciate any advice on possible causes. I know how frustrating it can be to diagnose an intermittant problem, but I don't want to feel like I can't trust my car. I had this same sort of problem long ago when I was driving my first Volvo- a 1983 240. Turns out it was the airbox thermostat on it, but it took a while to figure that out.

Thanks!

Michelle

Yank the codes from port A-2 and post them back.

Intermittent problems like yours often point to a fuel pump relay that is going south and since it has only done it once it could be a fuel pump itself going bad.

Any codes from A-2 will help us long distance help you with the diagnosis.

My mechanic says the only code is for the rear O2 sensor, which I haven't had a chance to replace yet.

It did it again over the weekend, but this time it was when I was idling in line at the bank.
