93 940-cant open trunk

Post by dan4log »

I have an immaculate 940 w over 240k well maintained. 11/27/08 couldn't open trunk. I followed steps covered in the manual but to no avail. I figure once i get it opened, I can investigate further as to what the problem is. This has never occured before. Lever may not be actuating the latch, since when it is pulled there is no resistance, just smooth movement back and forth. Being a holiday service is tough to find and i need my luggage. power locks work fine. thanks for any help.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
I followed steps covered in the manual but to no avail.
What are the steps you followed?

The symptoms you give sound as though the trunk lock has been disconnected from the central locking.

ok, the manual gives instructions for reconnecting the trunk lock. it shows a circle with a dark vertical line and a dotted line at approx. 2:00 with red arrows. one arrow(longer) goes from left midway to 2:00 right and the other arrow(short) goes from 2:00 right to 12:00 left, then remove key in vert. position.

now i dont know what status the locking system has be in, locked or unlocked when starting this procedure. if that does not matter; my next question is what position does the key slot have to be in. the book shows a vertical position.

let me know your thoughts. my wife took the car on a excursion
away from town to visit friends and i am left here wearing relatives clothes, it has been fun.

It does not matter whether the system is locked or unlocked when you start.

Have you tried to unlock with the key in the trunk lock or are you only using the central locking?

Yes, we did. I appreciate your input but it sounds like perhaps something may have gone wrong. If anything else comes to mind feel free to share your thoughts. I wanted to avoid taking it into a shop, since I work on my car myself. I know once i get it opened i could addess the issue and be done with it. Do you know if it can be opened through the small hatch through the back seat. My wife will back tomorrow and I will look through there to see if there is anything. Thanks! appreciate the time.

I found this on brickboard:
940/960 Cars. [Tip from Tony Diamond] The usual problem is that the lock control arm, extending from the lock cylinder to the lock itself, has come loose. This is unfortunately covered by the plastic boot trim and is not accessible through the ski hatch opening. You can try two approaches. Easy, risk free: remove the rear seat, climb into the trunk, remove the trim, and repair the lock. Brute Force: A friend with the same car allowed me to dismantle the trim in the trunk to see what was inside. I measured the position of the arm in relation to the rear panel, I then drilled a hole behind the rear number plate and was able to recover the loose end of the control arm with a wire coat hanger and then tugged it open with a pair of long nosed grips. The hole was 25mm and was treated and sealed with a rubber grommet and is unseen under the number plate.
I think I would be wary of the "Brute force" method as that is a big hole to drill.
