Where did you buy your torx sets from? Looking for xmas!

Post by wheelsup »

Hi guys I'm looking to get a torx set for Xmas, the standard stuff T10 or so thru T45 will work for my 850 and future 70 series I would assume, but I'm also wondering about the timing belt torx as well as just general quality. I don't want to strip any of those bolts!

I saw some from Sears, Lisle's 12 set piece on sale from $32 for $16, but was worried about quality as some research I've done has said they aren't that great. Right now I've actually used a set that came in a cheapo screwdriver set but I want something a bit easier to use without having to put the bit in a 12 point socket and tape it in :D!! So far it's held up great though, even removed the thermostat bolts without stripping.

In hand I've got a 9 pc set from Harbor Freight Tools that does have a lifetime warranty on them but...it's Harbor Freight, so...

Also sawthis set which includes a T45 would that bit fit into the engine compartment to remove the timing belt tensioner pulley on a craftsman 3/8" wrench anyone know? What do you guys use to remove that T45 bolt? My indy said he uses a 1/4" T45 my guess is like this one...thoughts?

:P

I've got all Craftsman torx drivers and sockets (both 1/4" and 3/8" drive)--very good tools. Haven't stripped a bolt yet!

Matt, I was a Craftsman purest for a long time until the last year or so. Now I am a big Harbor Freight fan.

That's where my set came from and I haven't had any trouble.

Craftsman is so expensive and just about every other name brand (Am-Pro, Huskey, Stanley, etc.) comes with a lifetime warranty now anyway (and mostly made in China).....

The Craftsman's are still made in the USA and with a Sears close by just about everywhere, they are easy to exchange if you break one. I have quite a few HF tools and they are not great quality at all, but they are all tools I only use occaisionally. You could always go with Snap On too. High quality with a high price!

I got mine from HF. I've had the same set for about 7 years from when I had a Jeep. They've held up well, considering everything on a Jeep is torx, and they're usually rusty.

Craftsman quality isn't what it used to be. Some of their stuff is starting to border on HF quality. sad.

I also have Craftsman torx sockets and a couple of Eklind torx wrench sets (short and long) to get into the tight spaces under the dash. Both are working well, and I especially like the convenience of the no questions asked replacement policy at Sears

Thanks guys I think I'll stick with the HF set for now, we'll see I hope they hold up. Sounds like others haven't had any issues with them so far. I've been using a set I got in a $5 tool kit as a KID that are bits that fit into an open ended screwdriver so HF can't be worse than those.

On a side note anyone know if the T45 on the timing belt pulley is a torx plus? Or just a regular torx? It almost seems like it might be a torx plus. Anyway...thanks all.

I'm not sure what a torx plus is but the timing belt roller mount bolt has a weird concave base.
