850 N/A Throttleplate Modifications

Apparently some 850 N/As had a big plastic chunk hanging off of their throttle plates, restricting acceleration at lower RPMs. As these guys discovered at VolvoSpeed.

I have a 1998 N/A S70, which the engine I believe is very similar to the 850 because it is before the new troublesome electronic throttle.
Can anyone confirm the existence of this rubber piece the later 850s or early S70s?
This would be an easy mod for some extra power when switching to a t5 is not an option.

The following is a diagram of the NA '98 S70 Throttle mechanism, close-up, that shows how the throttle plate works. Clearly the restricted piece is attached to the throttle plate:

The question is, is that piece the same as on the 850's and will the diameter of the 960 throttle plate fit the S70 throttle? I do not know the answers to these questions, so best bet is to get into yours and compare them.

If i remember correctly, 98 S70/V70 was essentially a late 850 in drag. On 99+ cars volvo went to fly by wire throttle. So I suspect the modification would also work on the S70. Easy way to check is the diameter of the TB. NA 850s and the 960 have a 65mm throttle plate. If the S70 is the same then you're in business. Any 960 throttle plate should work.

Hmm, this looks like something I should to my N/A 850. Does anyone know where I can pick up a 960 throttleplate? I've kinda looked around online, but haven't found too much yet.

Does anyone know if a throttle plate from a 940 turbo would work for this mod? I've found a guy who's parting out one on Craigslist. I'm not sure if the turbo uses a 55mm or 65mm plate.

Does anyone know if that piece of plastic on that throttle plate can simply be removed, thus keeping the throttle plate? If so, would that not be simpler than trying to find a 960 plate somewhere? I am looking to do this on my '95 850NA.~ vvhdr

There is a open hole/slot in the 850 plate. If you ground the plastic smooth then you'd run the risk of sucking it out and into the engine.

I've heard of people welding the hole closed.

Good luck finding a 960 plate, I looked for 6 months before finally finding a 960 at the JY.

Just order one from Darryl Waltrip Volvo in Franklin, TN- I believe it's about $10 and they had them in stock the last time I looked.

you can get 960 throttle bodys on ebay. I have 2 one on my 93 850 5speed and the other is going on my 94 turbo. one I got off ebay around $40, the other 960 throttle body i got at my local pick and pull for like $5.
