P1 vs. P2

Post by code-man850 »

So let me get this straight. The p1 is the smaller looking v70 and the p2 is the bigger (2001-) v70. Correct? What would be the better one to build?

Nope...they are calling the newest models of the S/V40/50 and S30 the P1 now. The P2's are the S/V60/70 and S80 from '01 on. The early version of the V70 (and I include the C/S70 here too) are generally referred to as 1st Generation. I hope that helps. (oops, leaving out the XC's...and these follow the same years as the above).

Better one to build? That's hard to say. Many who have the $$$ are "building" up the P2's but they are much more computer intensive and have the CAN Bus, and so this is difficult (unless you're just talking about "tuning," such as upgraded turbo, down pipes, etc. which isn't hard but does cost some bucks- more than the first generation). The earlier first generation S/V70's (shouldn't leave out the C's too) are definitely easier to "build" as are the 850's and less expensive. If you're asking which ones you see increase boost and torque more (proportionately) from a "build," I would have to say the first generation cars...at least dollar for dollar.
I'm sorry for the convoluted answer, but you get the picture- This is probably a pretty controversial topic....

Let the opinions begin!

I would have to agree. I own one of each and I would feel more comfortable running higher hp in the 850 than the XC. But thats basically just because the tranny in my 850 seems bullet proof, and im not a fan of the aw50-55 tranny in the XC.
Also the 1st generation cars sell really cheap now, as they are old and have alot of aftermarket options for this same reason. Id love to have an S60 R though, it'll be my next car.

Wow thanks for all the info. Took me a couple times reading to understand but I got it now. I am currently driving a 96 855 and LOVE IT. The only reason i am thinking of another car is that the dash and tailgate wont stop ratteling. Can anybody help me? I love my 850 and do not want to abandon it.

BOTH are fixable.
The tailgate is cheap and easy to have done, the dash takes several hours to remove, insulate and re clip it

how do i get the tailgate tighter? The latch is the lose part that lets it jiggle side to side over bumps. I've stopped the squeek from the dash once but it seems to just transfer somewere els. Seems to never stop.

CM, remember to keep threads on-topic by posting separate questions in the 850 forum.

Thanks!
